For finance major Noah Rockeymoore, one conversation at a campus career fair opened the door to an opportunity he never expected — an internship with one of America’s leading insurance companies.
Now a Group Underwriting intern at Mutual of Omaha, Rockeymoore is gaining hands-on experience while discovering how classroom concepts translate into real-world business decisions.
"I was introduced to underwriting at my university's career fair," Rockeymoore said. "The more I learned about the insurance industry and Mutual of Omaha, the more I realized it was a company with a really strong culture. That made me want to apply."
A valuable investment in training
As part of the Group Underwriting team, Rockeymoore is helping evaluate employee benefit plan renewals. This involves analyzing various risk factors and determining appropriate rates.
While Rockeymoore enjoys his work, what impressed him most during his first few weeks wasn't just the projects — it was the investment Mutual of Omaha makes in its interns.
"The training has been incredible," he said. "The company has spent a lot of time making sure we're comfortable with our responsibilities and understand the products before we're expected to do the work. I've never experienced training at this level before."
That preparation has helped Rockeymoore build confidence and apply concepts from his finance courses — particularly in risk management — to real business situations.
People who care
Another positive aspect of Rockeymoore’s intern experience has been the people.
"Everyone has been so welcoming," Rockeymoore said. "Whether it's the other interns, my mentor or my supervisor, everyone genuinely wants you to succeed. People are always willing to answer questions or just be someone you can talk to."
It's that supportive environment that has made the biggest impression.
"I know people talk about company culture a lot, but the family culture here is real," he said. "You can see it in the way people treat each other."
Although Rockeymoore works remotely from San Antonio, Texas, he’s also traveled to Mutual of Omaha’s headquarters for intern orientation and other events, giving him opportunities to build relationships with fellow interns and associates from across the company.

"Go for it," he said. "The training, the support and the experience make it a great opportunity. You'll gain a deep understanding of the work before you're asked to do it. It's been an experience I'd definitely recommend."
For Rockeymoore, one conversation at a campus career fair led to new skills, greater confidence and a clearer picture of where his career could go. For future interns, that same opportunity could be just one application away.
